Celebrated Tibetan food traditions

While you decide which corner of the old town to get lost in, you should know that you will likely eat your way through the city.

While you decide which corner of the old town to get lost in, you should know that you will likely eat your way through the city.

At these high altitudes, you tend to crave comfort foods that warm your insides. First things first: fight any possible bout of nausea with ginger tea. Most restaurants in town serve the delicious potion. If you drove around the region, you probably spotted the long-haired beasts known as yak. Their milk is used to make yak butter tea. It is said in Tibetan medicine that it is the combination of butter and tea that balances the mind-body. Yak meat is cooked in spices and wrapped into dumplings but also served as juicy steaks. The celebrated Tibetan food traditions come alive in the many hole-in-the-wall joints of the old town. Feeling a little lost? Take a look at our Collectable Experiences. Our guide will show you around.
