LUXNAM* Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s first overwater resort, is a modernist gem tucked between the jungle and the beach of remote Phu Quoc island

Phu Quoc, once a sleepy island backwater, has become quite the scene. Larger-than-life resorts dot its sun-doused coastline. But far from the bustle, through miles of dense tropical forests, is a wild stretch of beach at the edge of the jungle on the northern tip of the island. A protected paradise. This is where you will find LUXNAM* Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s very first Maldivian-style overwater resort perched on stilts over the bath-warm shallows.

Inspired by the iconic overwater resorts of the Maldives, part of the resort is built on stilts, including the overwater villas and holistic LUX* Me spa. The other part–a mix of mansions, villas and penthouses–is nestled between the beach and jungle. The design strikes a rather splendid note. Minimalist and modern, while honouring local craft and traditional materials. Giant fallen tree trunks, twisted branches blackened by lightning and boulders make for a treasure trove of materials that stand the test of time. The resort faces the emerald lagoon, its back to the jungle draped inland, giving life to the feng shui saying, Kào shān bèi hăi. The interiors are lined with sand-hued rattan and splashes of green–tropical foliage–that bring the great outdoors inside. Every corner is worthy of being the cover of a design magazine.

There is NAMU, an all-day eatery centrally located inside The Clubhouse. Beach Rouge, the restaurant-meets-beach-club brings a slice of bohemian Ibiza to Phu Quoc. Salt & Pepper, the name of which pays homage to the culture of black pepper on the island, is a delicious seafood joint with an oyster bar, and seating pods inspired by traditional Vietnamese fishing boats. The highlight is the salt and pepper trolley with a curated selection of salts from around the world, pepper, chillies, and the famous homemade fish sauce, which allows guests to customise their dish at the table. Ai KISU, the upscale Asian restaurant with its show-stopper, the Warayaki fire, is electrifying. Refuel at Maison LUX*, the Milanese style café, where come nightfall, bartenders replace the baristas while espressos and made into espresso martinis. When all you are craving is a juicy burger, pop by BB’s for some gourmet fast food. End on a sweet note at ICI, our very own brand of artisan ice cream.

There’s the beach for walks, the ocean for dips, and the spa and fitness centre for all things health-related. The fitness facilities are cutting-edge with a variety of cardio machines, strength training equipment, and knockout views of the surroundings. In addition to the overwater villas, there are 17 mansions, villas and penthouses set between the jungle and beach. Each exquisitely-designed home sets the stage for island living at its best. There are 3- and 4-bedroom villas, and even two 5-bedroom, 1114 sqm beachfront mansions. The mornings are sweet – head to the Clubhouse for a café or simply your terrace, a front-row seat at breakfast for a view of the place.
